 STRESSED OUT? OUT OF BALANCE?

If everything has to be done NOW

BE IN CONTROL OF STRESS IN 8 STEPS

Not everything has to be done NOW

Not everything has to be done NOW. I feel it again. I am stressed. My body feels rushed. My legs are tingling. My breath stops from time to time. My muscles in my neck, shoulders, and back are stuck. I get a headache. Oh dear, I suffer from stress. Why always that stress? Why do I often suffer from that haunted feeling? In this blog, I write more about the origin of (my) stress and how I can manage stress with my relaxation / make-room-in-your-head-step-by-step plan.

I recently came across a nice post from someone on Instagram, which read:
“If I have the idea that everything has to be done now, then I know that I have to stop again.”

And indeed. I checked for myself; “Why am I experiencing the stress I am now feeling?”

Do I have to do a lot of things from myself? (‘Yes’). Would you prefer those things now? (‘Yes’). Why does it have to be now? (“Because I’m afraid if I don’t do it now, it will be too late later”). So that. But what am I afraid of? Missing the boat? See the train leave without me? Or do I want to run and save a seat on that leaving train at all costs, with a gasping breath, a painful body, and then suddenly find out that the train I was trying to jump on was nothing more than a fantasy?

Why do I ask so much of myself NOW?
Why not later? Or maybe never at all?

Wanting to avoid pain: stress factor

I am the kind of person who is easy to wind up. So I was working on a vacation because I really need some rest. Result? Stress! Why? The website said: “Book now! Only 1 room left for this low price ”. I thought I could withstand this… but nothing could be further from the truth. So quickly consulted with my hubby, and came to the conclusion that we could not book yet for various reasons. But the voice in the back of your head gnaws: “But if I book later, I will pay more – and I don’t want that!” No because I want to avoid that pain of paying too much at all costs. So I’d rather let myself be winded up, to score the best deal…

Preventing pain creates stress

In addition to wanting a lot of things now, I always want to win and I can’t stand my loss very well. I grant others to win somewhat, but I prefer to be on the podium myself. And it is precisely this urge that causes so much stress in my body. I am always trying to avoid the pain of “loss.” Not only in the gym, but also at work. I often work (too) hard to avoid the pain of loss. And what does that mean? Yes: Stress.

How much should actually be done NOW?

So when I feel that stress, that agitation, I know it is time to hit the brakes. While my head and body want to sprint, if I think that everything has to be NOW… Right then I sit down.

My step-by-step plan against stress

# 1. I sit in a quiet place with my feet flat on the floor

# 2. I pray/tell/cry out my frustrations to God

# 3. I write off the frustrations and draw up a 2 do list (which is often very long)

# 4. I become silent

# 5. I control my breathing. If it is not in order (usually not during stress) then I breathe through my nose (with attention on the stomach), hold the breath for a few seconds, and then exhale through my mouth until the next breath presents itself. I do this for a few minutes until my breathing has “calmed down”.

# 6. I analyze my body. Where is it stuck? Sometimes I massage some spots myself or make an appointment with the physiotherapist.

# 7. I shift my focus to an activity that requires my attention (i.e., where I can’t think about all the things that make me so stressed). E.g. I read a relaxing and simple book like this.

And when I caught my breath…

# 8. I get the 2 do list (step # 3) – shuffle and cross off
What does it say? What really has priority? What is really necessary now? And what can we do tomorrow? Or next week? Or maybe never at all? Do I have to change appointments to create peace of mind? (Do you rather not reschedule an appointment because you ‘find it annoying’ for the other person? Then I will tell you a little secret: maybe the other person secretly likes it that the appointment is canceled; does he/she also have an evening/afternoon for themselves – just saying…).

By shifting in your schedule, you create peace of mind again. It sounds so simple, but how often do you actually apply it when you need it to regain balance?

So I cry out to you: “Dare to take good care of yourself!” And that includes a balanced agenda. Because if you feel you need some air, then you need it. Take the signals from your body and mind seriously.

Do you feel stress rising?

Do you feel stress rising? Stop yourself and calm yourself (possibly with the help of my step-by-step plan). The more you do this, the easier it will be. It may take you fifteen minutes or half an hour, but it gains a lot of room for thought, which makes you more relaxed and allows you to focus better.

Love,

Stella
